Mazda’s lineup is used to receiving award after award. From numerous Top 10 finishes in Car and Driver — including the Mazda MX-5 and the Mazda3 in 2016 — to seven awards handed out by The Car Guide in Canada, Mazda knows how to impress automotive experts. This year, Mazda even took home both the Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year award as well as the title of Canadian Green Utility Vehicle of the Year handed out by AJAC.

At this year’s New York International Auto Show at the beginning of April, Mazda took home yet another award as the 2016 Mazda MX-5 was named World Car of the Year by a panel of over 70 automotive journalist experts from around the world. There were a total of 23 cars nominated for the prestigious award which was then narrowed to three finalists including the 2017 Audi A4 and the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC which the Mazda MX-5 beat out to take home the final prize.

“What a wonderful honor, to have the Mazda MX?5 named World Car of the Year,” said Masahiro Moro, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations, and Managing Executive Officer at the Mazda Motor Corporation.  “As our iconic MX?5 roadster approaches one?million units of production, this award is proof that it is as young, vibrant, fun and relevant as ever.  While I accept this award on behalf of the company, I do so representing every Mazda employee, retail partner and customer around the world who has ever felt the joy of driving a pure roadster.  We say ‘Driving Matters’ in our advertising, and we prove it in our cars.”

2016 Mazda MX-5 Also Wins World Car Design of the Year Award

That said, Mazda and the MX-5 weren’t finished just yet. The sporty roadster, which was first introduced in 2009, also won the World Car Design of the Year award handed out by the same panel of journalists. This award is meant to highlight vehicles that “push established boundaries” in terms of style and innovation.

Starting at $31,900, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 was completely redesigned last year and now features a more rigid SKYACTIV chassis and body that allow the already sporty and dynamic roadster to handle even better. The MX-5 is powered by a new SKYACTIV engine that is both more fuel-efficient and more powerful as well, and its refined design gives the 2016 Mazda MX-5 a one-of-a-kind design that always stands out on the road.
