The Mazda CX-5 is Mazda’s most popular vehicle, having recently surpassed the Mazda3 at the top of the Japanese automaker’s sales charts. For 2017, the Mazda CX-5 gets several significant changes, including the addition of an all-new diesel engine, a first for Mazda in North America! The new 2017 Mazda CX-5 was unveiled yesterday at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
A new diesel engine for the 2017 Mazda CX-5 in Toronto
Let’s start with this new diesel engine. This is certainly the most significant addition to the CX-5 lineup, and the most important change that comes with the 2017 Mazda CX-5, although ultimately there are several improvements that have been made to the compact SUV. The 2.2-liter SKYACTIV-D four-cylinder engine is already available in other markets, and although we do not yet know the exact specifications for this engine in North America, we know that it develops 173 horsepower in the European Mazda6. We should know more about the SKYACTIV-D’s specs for the 2017 Mazda CX-5 destined for the Canadian market a little later.
This engine has the lowest compression ratio in the industry for a diesel engine, and will therefore be able to meet stringent global environmental emission standards.
Visually, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 (incidentally the first Mazda vehicle equipped with the KODO visual language was the first-generation CX-5) has not been completely revolutionized when it comes to design, but there is no doubt that its silhouette is much more modern. In fact, it now shares many design elements with its big brother, the brand new Mazda CX-9. We mostly notice the changes in front where a new grill gives the CX-5 a more noticeable presence, while the CX-5 will get a new color called Soul Red Crystal, a very bright red whose color varies slightly depending on the angle. Simply put, it is quite beautiful.
The interior also receives a lot of improvements, and again we see that the Mazda CX-9 served as inspiration. Overall, the interior will be much more upscale with more supple and better-quality materials, as well as several modifications made to the various elements of the cockpit, notably to the center console.
Two other well-known engines for the 2017 Mazda CX-5
In addition to the diesel engine, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 will be powered by the two other engines which we find on the current Mazda CX-5. The first is the four-cylinder SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine that delivers 155 horsepower, while the other found on more upscale versions is a four-cylinder SKYACTIV- G engine that delivers 184 horsepower. Front-wheel drive will be standard while all-wheel drive will be optional.
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 also receives Mazda’s new G-Vectoring Control technology, a device that uses engine torque to reduce steering movements. The end result is improved driver and passenger comfort as they move less from side to side in their seat, in addition to having to make less corrections to the steering wheel on the highway.
